Adding or Editing Points

Last updated: 2020-04-30

A project point is a location that can be described by a single latitude and longitude measurement and is used to locate a specific site for project work or the site for a portion of the project’s work. Complete the required fields, using the field tool tips or the Project Summary Data Fields table for guidance. Entry of this information is being done so it can be used for bid collusion analysis.

Requirements:
  • By default, each project has ONLY ONE Midpoint record. Edit this record. Do not create additional Midpoint records.
  • The creation of Beginpoint and Endpoint records is optional.
  1. Select the Points tab to edit the description, latitude and longitude of the Midpoint of the project or to add a Beginpoint or Endpoint to the project.

  2. To edit the existing midpoint record:
    1. In the Type drop-down list, leave Midpoint as the selection.
    2. Click <Get Lat/Long>. getLatLong will open in a browser window.
A project “midpoint” is required by the AASHTOWare Project Preconstruction system.
    3. Enter the address or approximate location. Click <Go>.
    4. Copy the Latitude and Longitude values to the associated fields on the Points tab. Enter all longitude numbers as a positive value.
    5. Description - By default, the route from FIIPs will be populated into the description field of the Midpoint record. Update by adding a comma behind the route followed by the county name.
      Examples:
      • BUS 051, Marathon County
      • CTH D, Wood County
      • IH 039, Portage County
      • LOC STR, Dane County
      • STH 053, Chippewa County
      • TWN RD, Manitowoc County
      • USH 029, Shawano County
      • VAR HWY, Milwaukee County and Racine County
      • VAR HWY, Northeast region
      • VAR HWY, Statewide
    6. Click <Save>.
  3. To add an additional point, click <New>.
    1. In the Type drop-down list, select BeginPoint or EndPoint.
    2. Click <Get Lat/Long>. getLatLong.net will open in a browser window.
WisDOT does not require the creation of a project BeginPoint and EndPoint; however, if the information is available it may be useful for future reference.
    3. Enter the address or approximate location. Click <Go>.
    4. Copy the Latitude and Longitude values to the associated fields on the Points tab. Enter all longitude numbers as a positive value.
    5. Description - Enter a combination of the project route and county as they appear in FIIPS, separated with a comma.
      Examples:
      • BUS 051, Marathon County
      • CTH D, Wood County
      • IH 039, Portage County
      • LOC STR, Dane County
